Meet Behavior Frontiers Livonia Autism Center Clinical Director Ian McGarvey
Q: How long has the Livonia Autism Center been open and how long have you been with Behavior Frontiers?
A: Our Livonia autism center has been open to clients since November of 2023. We are currently providing services to 12 clients between the ages of 3-6. I have been with Behavior Frontiers since September of 2023.
Q: What makes Livonia a great place to live for autism parents?
A: Livonia is a wonderful community with numerous attractions that are friendly and welcoming to the autism community. The AMC movie theater in Livonia offers sensory-friendly film showings with lowered sound and dim lighting, allowing children to move around and express themselves freely. Urban Air, a large trampoline park, provides a safe and fun environment for kids of all ages to jump, fly, and climb. Additionally, the Livonia Public Library is very supportive of special needs, offering various programs that benefit socialization and generalization opportunities for children from early childhood to their teenage years.
Q: What do you love about your role as Regional Clinical Director? What makes Livonia stand out from the other Detroit centers?
A: I was hired to come to Behavior Frontiers as a Regional Clinical Director to help support our clinical directors on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
I have held different positions, such as behavior technician and clinical director. This has allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of our operations. I have also actively participated in various roles within the organization.
Working collaboratively with our non-clinical departments, I’ve helped shape the structure of our newest centers in Michigan, including scheduling, recruiting, and client intake. I enjoy providing clinical guidance and support while collaborating with our operational partners to create an optimal environment for employees and an enjoyable space for our clients and families.
Q: What can parents expect when they bring their child to Behavior Frontiers Autism Center in Livonia for their first session?
A: Every client has two main goals for their first 1-2 weeks of therapy: to want to come to the center every day and to be happy throughout their time with us. While learning is important, we prioritize creating a comfortable and safe environment where children can express when they are ready to learn and when they need a break. This rapport with our clients fosters optimal learning and prepares them for a smooth transition into school.
Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
A: I enjoy golfing, even though the golf season in Michigan is relatively short. I also love attending sports events, concerts, and live music. Spending time with friends and family is very important to me.
Q: What tips do you have for autism parents looking for an ABA therapy provider?
A: Look for an autism provider that emphasizes trauma-informed and compassionate care. The field of ABA therapy is constantly evolving and improving. At our centers, we focus on client happiness, compassion, empathy, and prioritizing the client’s voice, whether vocal or physical.
When visiting other centers, I observe the engagement of behavior technicians with the clients to ensure they are available and responsive to the children's needs. Building rapport involves always being readily available for the child.
