Autism Diagnosis Rates Now 1 in 31: What This Means and How We’re Expanding Access to Support for Families
New CDC Data Highlights Autism Diagnosis Trends
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released updated data from its Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, showing that 1 in 31 eight-year-old children in the U.S. are now identified as having autism spectrum disorder. That’s an increase from 1 in 36 just two years ago—a 16% rise. Furthermore, they released data that boys continue to be diagnosed at higher rates than girls, with a current male-to-female diagnosis ratio of approximately 3.5 to 1.
Understanding the Numbers
The CDC has not determined whether this rise represents a true increase in autism prevalence, or if it's the result of other contributing factors. So, while these numbers show an increase in diagnoses, it’s important to understand what other factors may be contributing such as:
Greater awareness among parents, caregivers, and educators
Improved screening practices by pediatricians
Refined diagnostic criteria and a broader understanding of the autism spectrum
More families seeking evaluations earlier in a child’s development
It’s also important to recognize that autism can present differently in girls, leading to underdiagnosis or delayed identification (read more about autism diagnosis in girls here). While current data shows higher rates among boys, the gender gap may not fully reflect actual prevalence. Continued research and education are essential to ensure that all children, regardless of gender, have equal access to appropriate evaluations and care.
Meeting Growing Needs with Expanded Access to ABA Services
As more families seek support after a diagnosis, one thing remains true: the need for access to high-quality, individualized services. At Behavior Frontiers, we are deeply committed to expanding access to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services that help children build meaningful skills and ultimately thrive in everyday environments.
Over the last few years, we’ve taken significant steps to meet this growing demand:
19 new autism care centers opened since 2023, with 15+ new centers opening in 2025 to reach more communities and reduce geographic barriers to care
Expanded 3 existing centers to serve more children with personalized center-based ABA care—with additional expansions already in progress to meet growing community needs
100 new Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and almost 5200 Behavior Technicians (BT) hired in the last year to support families across the country
Established partnerships with diagnosticians in select regions, helping families receive a diagnosis in as little as 3 weeks—compared to the months or even year-long wait times that many families face
Built partnerships with speech and occupational therapy providers in select regions to create a “one-stop shop” experience for families accessing multiple services in one convenient location
Strengthened ties with local schools to help families navigate transitions and ensure consistent support across all settings
Partnered with most major commercial insurance plans and Medicaid programs, helping families access care with confidence that their services are covered
Whether a family is just beginning their autism journey or continuing care after early intervention, our team is here to help. We understand that starting services quickly can make a meaningful difference—and we’re committed to making that process as smooth and accessible as possible.
Our Commitment to Families
At Behavior Frontiers, we know that behind every autism diagnosis is a family looking for the right support and compassionate care. Whether you’re just beginning this journey or continuing along the way, we’re here to help make that path clearer—and a little less overwhelming.
While it’s not yet clear what’s driving the rise in autism diagnoses, one thing is: families deserve continued access to timely, personalized care. That’s why we’re expanding our centers, growing our team, and building partnerships that help children start services earlier and closer to home.
Our commitment is simple: to meet families where they are, provide care that’s grounded in compassion and expertise, and create more opportunities for every child to learn, grow, and thrive.
