It's Time to Go Back to School!

The summer is finally winding down, and now it’s time to prepare for all that fall brings: cooler weather, more community activities, and of course, children getting back into the classroom! Changes in routine can be difficult for anyone, but it provides additional challenges for children with autism. However, with a few simple tips, and a little bit of preparation, you can help your child return to school with as little stress as possible.

Firstly, preparation is key. As soon as possible, begin working with your child on getting them back into a school routine. Start practicing having your child get out of bed at the same time as they will for school. If your child will be responsible for bathing, dressing, and getting themselves ready for school, work on establishing those habits now, to avoid shock when they have to do it later. Think of your normal morning routine during the school year, including wakeup times, breakfast habits, transportation concerns, etc., and work on building those healthy habits! And, of course, don’t forget to provide positive reinforcement throughout the process!

If your child will be starting school for the first time (or attending a new school), there are some additional steps you can take to prepare your child for a new environment and routine. Take any opportunity you can to visit your child’s school or meet the teacher or support staff in advance. If the school is locked, walk around and see what is visible through the fence. Finally, express excitement: “See that playground? Won’t it be fun to play on that?”
